Learn how to install the Dogtra ANT 5 dual antenna on compatible transmitters, confirm model compatibility, and troubleshoot range issues with practical checkpoints.
Quick answer
The Dogtra ANT 5 dual antenna is a genuine replacement part for Dogtra 3500X, 3502X, and T&B DUAL transmitters. Install it by matching the model, threading it hand-tight, and checking range before relying on it in the field.
Why the dual antenna is model-specific
Dogtra builds the ANT 5 dual antenna for a defined set of transmitters: 3500X, 3502X, and T&B DUAL. The connector and antenna length are matched to those models, so a physically similar antenna from another device may not seat or perform correctly. If your transmitter is not on that list, this part is not the right fit even if the threads appear to match.
What to check before you buy
Look at the model name printed on your transmitter housing rather than relying on the product family or the color of the case. The catalog lists compatibility only for the three models above; it does not provide gain, length, or range specifications, so treat any claimed range improvement as dependent on your specific terrain and setup rather than a guaranteed number.
When a new antenna will not fix range
A replacement antenna restores a damaged or missing part; it does not overcome interference, a depleted battery, or terrain that blocks signal. If your range dropped suddenly and the antenna looks intact, check the battery and the collar connection first. The ANT 5 is also not a universal upgrade for other Dogtra series, so do not buy it hoping to convert an incompatible transmitter.
How to install and check the ANT 5 dual antenna
- Confirm your transmitter model: Read the model name on the transmitter housing and compare it with the compatibility list: 3500X, 3502X, or T&B DUAL. Common mistake: assuming all Dogtra transmitters use the same antenna thread. Snap a photo of the model label before ordering so you can verify it later.
- Remove the old antenna carefully: Turn the transmitter off, then unscrew the old antenna by hand. Do not use pliers, which can crack the housing or strip the threads. Checkpoint: the old antenna should come off without resistance. If the old antenna will not turn by hand, stop and inspect for cross-threading before forcing it.
- Thread the ANT 5 by hand: Start the new antenna threads by hand and turn clockwise until it seats lightly. Common mistake: over-tightening, which can damage the connector. Stop when you feel firm contact, not when you cannot turn it further. Hand-tight is the target; a tool is not needed.
- Check the physical fit: With the transmitter off, gently wiggle the antenna base. It should not wobble or gap against the housing. Checkpoint: any movement means the antenna is not seated correctly or the threads are damaged. A wobbling antenna will not hold position in the field and should be reseated or replaced.
- Run a short range test: Turn on the transmitter and receiver, then walk a familiar open area while testing stimulation or tone at increasing distance. Compare with your normal working range. Common mistake: testing indoors or near buildings, which gives misleading results. Record the distance where response first becomes unreliable so you have a baseline for future checks.
- Carry the old antenna as a spare if it still works: If the old antenna is intact, keep it in your kit as a backup. Checkpoint: label it with the model it fits so you do not mix parts between transmitters. A labeled spare prevents a field day from ending early if the new antenna is damaged.
